Ed Nisley pointed out a weak point of Sherline’s CNC machines in his June 09 tip, “Anchoring Sherline Stepper Motor Wires.” The cable outputs of the stepper motors are prone to wear and damage. In Photos 1 and 2, you can see my solution to this problem.
I’ve made terminal boxes for all the motors from hard PVC. I then fixed the boxes to the motor flange with 1mm aluminum strips. The sockets I used are identical to the 5-terminal DIN sockets used by Sherline.
The boxes and plugs help to prevent movement and possible damage to the wires. Also, it is sometimes helpful to be able to simply unplug a motors power if, for example, an axis should need to be manually set.
